The Roman Empire once stretched across much of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, leaving behind enough history that we’re still talking about it thousands of years later. In fact, “my Roman Empire” has become internet shorthand for that one topic you simply cannot stop thinking or talking about, and I have to admit, I have several Roman Empires of my own! But the actual Roman Empire gets even more fascinating once you move past emperors, gladiators, and conquests and look at how ordinary people lived. Their laws could dictate everything from what you wore to dinner to how often you could retrieve fruit that fell into your neighbor’s yard. Here are 20 Roman laws that make me very grateful nobody is checking how much gold I’m wearing or whether I’ve put on pants today.
