The birth of a baby is indeed something to celebrate, and in my culture, there are plenty of superstitions and little rites that come with welcoming one into the world. I grew up hearing the usual warnings about what pregnant women should or shouldn’t do, what supposedly brings a baby good luck, and what absolutely must happen after birth because somebody’s grandmother said so. I’ve learned not to question grandmothers too much. But look beyond the traditions we’re familiar with, and history gets wonderfully specific. Babies have been passed through cheese, carried around fires, presented with career choices before they could even walk, and given objects meant to protect their futures.
