When I was a teen, I used to sign some of my writing “Alistair Lecophin”—an anagrammatic pseudonym of my name—because I loved the anonymity and wasn’t particularly fond of being perceived. Very dramatic of me, I know. But while mine was a teenage choice, women throughout history hid their names for much higher-stakes reasons. Some wanted their books judged without the word “woman” getting in the way, while others used pseudonyms to write about politics, abuse, inequality, and ideas that weren’t exactly considered ladylike.
