2016 Trump contradicts 2024 Trump

A video of Trump from the 2016 election has recently resurfaced and is causing controversy. Reproaches are being directed at the former president, who is also a candidate in the next election.

In a video recorded at a rally in North Carolina shortly before the 2016 election, Trump addressed Hillary Clinton, saying that a candidate under criminal investigation should not be allowed to run.

A statement that resonates today as Trump is expected to be nominated as the Republican candidate in July and is himself facing significant legal troubles. He has just been convicted of fraud and is currently awaiting sentencing.

Donald Trump added that ultimately a criminal trial would “paralyze the government”.

In 2016, the FBI conducted an investigation into Hillary Clinton regarding the use of her private email server for official communications when she was Secretary of State. This investigation was highly publicized during the presidential campaign.

Although the FBI ultimately recommended against prosecuting Clinton, the case raised questions about the security of classified information and impacted her election campaign. This federal investigation was a central point of Trump’s attacks on the Democratic candidate.

James Comey, FBI Director at the time, announced the reopening of the federal investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private server when she was Secretary of State.

Trump had also told his supporters that the United States would face a “serious constitutional crisis” if Clinton won the election.

Even with the video, it’s hard to predict whether Donald Trump’s legal troubles will affect his political ambitions and those of the Republican Party, or even the outcome of the next election… but we already vaguely know the answer.
