A familiar soda is about to taste different as 7UP prepares its biggest transformation in more than 15 years. Keurig Dr Pepper is permanently changing the recipe behind the iconic beverage while giving the brand a dramatically refreshed identity. The nationwide overhaul reflects changing tastes among younger consumers and represents a significant gamble for a product whose signature citrus flavor has remained familiar to generations of drinkers.
A Major Change for 7UP
Keurig Dr Pepper is making one of the biggest changes to 7UP in more than 15 years, permanently reformulating the iconic soft drink around a new lime-forward flavor. The company is repositioning the familiar lemon-lime soda as Lime Lemon, putting lime rather than lemon at the center of the brand’s taste and identity.
Lime Takes the Lead
The new recipe reduces the prominence of lemon while bringing a sharper and zestier lime character to the forefront. Keurig Dr Pepper says consumer testing favored the lime-forward formulation, which the company believes will provide a more refreshing and distinctive taste without completely abandoning the citrus profile associated with 7UP.
The Entire Lineup Is Changing
The reformulation will not be limited to the original soda. Keurig Dr Pepper is introducing the new flavor profile across 7UP Regular, 7UP Zero Sugar, Cherry 7UP and Cherry 7UP Zero Sugar, making the shift toward lime a permanent change throughout the brand’s core lineup.
A Reinvention for a New Generation
Drew Panayiotou, chief marketing and innovation officer at Keurig Dr Pepper, described the overhaul as a major modernization effort, saying: «This is a bold reinvention of one of America’s most iconic soda brands for a new generation of consumers – starting with the flavor itself.»
Rewriting the Lemon-Lime Formula
The decision is heavily influenced by changing preferences among younger drinkers. According to Keurig Dr Pepper’s State of Beverages 2026 Trend Report, 72% of Gen Z and Gen Alpha consumers gravitate toward citrus-forward flavors, while 64% prefer bold and intense taste experiences.
Younger Consumers Drive the Shift
The decision is heavily influenced by changing preferences among younger drinkers. According to Keurig Dr Pepper’s State of Beverages 2026 Trend Report, 72% of Gen Z and Gen Alpha consumers gravitate toward citrus-forward flavors, while 64% prefer bold and intense taste experiences.
Fighting for Attention
Those preferences are particularly important as 7UP competes in an approximately $5 billion U.S. lemon-lime soda category. Established competitors and newer beverage alternatives have intensified pressure on traditional soda brands to differentiate themselves, making the lime-focused recipe part of a broader effort to give 7UP a clearer position in the market.
A Completely New Look
Consumers will also notice major changes to the packaging. Bottles and cans will receive bolder colors, a more energetic visual design and a distinctive vertical 7UP logo. The words Lime Lemon will appear prominently on the packaging, immediately signaling the reversal of the traditional lemon-lime flavor emphasis.
Returning to Its Uncola Roots
Keurig Dr Pepper is also using the transformation to reconnect 7UP with its historical Original Uncola® identity. The company wants the redesigned brand to challenge expectations again, presenting 7UP as a modern alternative capable of standing apart rather than relying exclusively on its longstanding reputation and familiarity.
The Rollout Begins Soon
The new Lime Lemon formulation and redesigned packaging will begin arriving at retailers nationwide in mid-August. Existing products will gradually disappear as stores sell through their remaining inventory, meaning shoppers may temporarily encounter both versions before the lime-forward recipe completely replaces the previous formulation.
The New 7UP Is Permanent
The rollout will be supported by a multiplatform marketing campaign called «Flip the Sip,» spanning social media, cultural events and in-store promotions. Keurig Dr Pepper describes the reformulation as the «best-tasting 7UP ever» and intends Lime Lemon to become the standard version of the soda rather than a temporary or limited-edition experiment.
