Heuermann is also the prime suspect in the murder of another woman, found on the same beach as the other three victims.

While the police had made no major breakthrough in these cases since the victims were discovered, they were reopened in full two years ago.

Investigators were reportedly on the suspect's trail for some time before his hasty arrest, for what they believed to be too great a risk to public safety.
