The findings arrive as the former president’s legacy takes on a new physical form through an $850 million campus designed to celebrate his presidency, public service and commitment to civic engagement.

According to the CNN survey, Obama holds a 57% favorability rating, the highest among all living presidents. The result places him comfortably ahead of George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Donald Trump and Joe Biden. The poll also found that 30% of Americans named Obama as the president they admire most, making him the clear leader in the survey’s open-ended presidential admiration question. No other living president came close to matching his level of support.

A major reason for Obama’s continued popularity is his overwhelming standing within the Democratic Party. The survey found that 96% of Democrats view him favorably, an extraordinary level of support rarely achieved by modern political figures. Obama remains the defining figure for many Democrats and continues to be viewed as one of the party’s most successful national leaders. Unlike many modern political figures, Obama’s support extends well beyond his party’s base. The poll found that 56% of independents hold a favorable opinion of the former president. Even among Republicans, Obama managed to secure a 19% favorability rating. That level of cross-party support helped boost his standing in the overall rankings and contributed to his first-place finish in the admiration category. Few contemporary political figures maintain comparable appeal across such a broad range of voters.

The survey’s most notable finding may be the admiration question. When respondents were asked which U.S. president they admire most, 30% selected Obama. The result placed him well ahead of every other president included in the survey and reinforced his standing as one of the most influential political figures of the modern era. The finding suggests that public perceptions of Obama’s presidency continue to improve even years after he left office.

President Donald Trump ranked second in the admiration category, with 19% of Americans naming him as the president they admire most. Trump’s overall favorability rating stood at 34%, substantially lower than Obama’s but still supported by intense loyalty from Republican voters. The survey found that 79% of Republicans view Trump favorably, demonstrating the strength of his support within the party. However, his appeal remains far more limited among independents and Democrats than Obama’s.

The poll illustrates the deeply polarized nature of Trump’s public image. While he remains overwhelmingly popular among Republican voters, only 25% of independents view him favorably. Among Democrats, just 5% expressed a favorable opinion. Those numbers help explain why Trump continues to command significant support while also facing some of the highest unfavorable ratings of any modern political figure. His second-place finish reflects both his influence and the divisions that continue to define American politics.

Former President George W. Bush emerged as the second most popular living president in overall favorability ratings. Bush received a 42% favorable rating, significantly ahead of both Trump and Biden. Political analysts often attribute Bush’s improved standing to the passage of time and changing perceptions of his presidency. Younger voters who did not directly experience many of the controversies surrounding his administration have also contributed to a gradual reassessment of his legacy.

Former President Bill Clinton received a more divided evaluation from respondents. The survey found that 38% of Americans view Clinton favorably while 39% view him unfavorably. In the admiration category, only 2% selected Clinton as the president they admire most. While Clinton remains an important figure in Democratic politics and modern presidential history, the poll suggests that his public standing has faded compared with Obama and Trump, who continue to dominate discussions about presidential legacies.

Former President Joe Biden posted the weakest numbers of any living president included in the survey. Biden received a 30% favorability rating, placing him behind Obama, Bush, Clinton and Trump. Only 20% of independents viewed him favorably, while his support among Democrats stood at 71%, significantly lower than Obama’s 96%. Just 5% of Republicans expressed a favorable opinion of Biden. The results indicate that Biden’s public image has continued to decline since leaving office.

The poll’s release coincides with the opening of the Obama Presidential Center on Chicago’s South Side. Built on a 19.3-acre campus in Jackson Park, the center includes a museum tower, a replica of the Oval Office, a public library branch, athletic facilities and major public art installations. The project is intended to serve not only as a presidential museum but also as a community and civic engagement hub. As visitors begin exploring the campus, the new CNN survey suggests that Obama’s legacy remains stronger than that of any other living American president, underscoring his lasting place in the nation’s political history.
