What appeared to be a simple drive on a road in South Texas quickly took a dramatic turn.

A couple in their 70s and 80s now faces serious federal drug trafficking charges following a major cocaine seizure by U.S. authorities.

According to court documents obtained by USA TODAY, Luke David Brader, 80, and Susan Brader, 74, were arrested on July 1 at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint near Falfurrias, Texas. During the inspection, a drug-sniffing dog alerted to the presence of drugs in the trailer the couple was towing.

Agents then discovered a secret compartment containing 134 packages of cocaine. The two suspects appeared in federal court on July 6, where they were charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.

The judge ruled that there was sufficient evidence to proceed with the case and ordered that they remain in custody pending a hearing on their possible release.

The Sequence of Events

According to the complaint filed in court, Luke Brader was driving a pickup truck pulling a white trailer when he and his wife arrived at a Border Patrol checkpoint located about 120 kilometers north of McAllen, in southern Texas.

During the routine immigration inspection, a U.S. Border Patrol sniffer dog reacted to the front wall of the trailer, immediately arousing the agents' suspicions. The vehicle was then directed to a more thorough secondary inspection.

Using an X-ray machine, authorities examined the pickup truck and trailer, discovering a secret compartment built into the front partition.

Inside were 134 packages of cocaine totaling more than 345 pounds—approximately 156 kilograms—a major seizure that led to federal charges against the couple.

Here's what we know!

As the investigation progressed, federal authorities claim to have obtained confessions from Luke and Susan Brader.

During their conversations with agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the two septuagenarians reportedly admitted that they were aware of the cocaine in the trailer they were transporting.

They also reportedly explained that their role was to transport the shipment to Houston in exchange for a sum ranging from $5,000 (US) to $10,000 (US).

Following these revelations, prosecutors charged them with possession of more than five kilograms of cocaine with intent to traffic. Court records show that each defendant is represented by a different attorney.

So far, neither defense attorney has wished to comment publicly on the case despite requests from the media.

Prison Ahead?

If Luke and Susan Brader are found guilty, they could spend many years behind bars.

Under U.S. federal law, a person charged with possessing more than five kilograms of cocaine with the intent to distribute faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison. In the most serious cases, the sentence can even be life in prison.

The exact sentence, however, will be determined by the court based on several factors, including the defendants' criminal histories, their level of involvement in the operation, their cooperation with investigators, and whether a plea agreement is reached.

Although Luke Brader is 80 years old and Susan Brader is 74, their age does not exempt them from the mandatory minimum sentences provided by law, although the judge may take it into account when handing down the final sentence.
