The incident unfolded on the morning of July 13 and immediately prompted responses from state and federal authorities as questions mounted over what led to another loss of life during an immigration enforcement operation.

The Biddeford shooting comes only days after another fatal ICE-related encounter in Houston, Texas, increasing pressure on the agency as criticism over its enforcement tactics continues to grow. The two incidents have reignited debate over the use of force by immigration officers and have drawn renewed attention to previous deadly operations earlier this year, including two controversial fatalities in Minnesota that sparked widespread protests and political backlash.

According to preliminary information released by authorities, the confrontation began at approximately 7:20 a.m. local time when ICE agents wearing tactical gear approached a white sedan at an intersection in Biddeford. Witnesses described a rapidly escalating situation involving several federal officers before gunfire erupted, leaving one young person dead and triggering a large emergency response at the scene.

One resident reported seeing an unmarked enforcement SUV attempt to ram the white sedan before agents surrounded the vehicle. The witness said officers then removed a man from the car who appeared to have suffered a severe head wound and could be heard saying, «I tried to stop». Internal information later indicated that Araujo was not the intended target and that agents had mistaken one of the passengers in his work vehicle for a suspect they were attempting to locate.

Federal officials and the victim’s legal representatives have offered sharply different accounts of the Houston shooting. The Department of Homeland Security stated that Araujo attempted to ram an officer with his vehicle. Attorneys representing his family, however, pointed to security footage they say shows an agent reaching through the window of a stationary vehicle before firing across the passenger compartment, striking Araujo.

Immigrant advocacy groups also renewed calls for greater oversight, pointing to the lack of body camera footage as another reason for increased accountability.
