Woman Walks By Room 1265 On Carnival Breeze. Then She Sees The Red Tape On The Door: ‘What Happened Here?’

Unexpected events happen everywhere, even on vacation. Perhaps especially on vacation. Noticing when something goes awry can be as unsettling as it is fascinating.
For one newbie cruiser, Mel, a vacation aboard the Carnival ship Breeze, was full of swimming, love, and red tape—literally.
What's Behind Door 1265?
In a post to TikTok, Mel (@melyb26) uploaded a short, seemingly innocuous video of a cruise ship cabin door. She's captioned the video “Just got off carnival breeze. I wonder why that room was sealed.” A closer look reveals that the door is taped closed in three places. The tape has a warning printed on it: “CCL Security Services Sealed Evidence Do Not Tamper.”
It does beg the question: Do not tamper with what?
The internet has a few ideas, none of which would enhance a vacation.
One self-identified former cruise ship worker, James Bavousett (@jbav1278), offered an explanation: “I worked on a cruise ship for six years…deaths weren't common, but they happened. Probably 1 person every 5-8 weeks for my ship. Serious medical issues were very common, but the ship never left Hawaii and we were in port every day, so it was easy to get them off to a hospital. On cruises with sea days back to back…ooof.”
The tape, according to commenter @Mdatca, is to preserve the contents of the room pending an investigation.
At least four other accounts corroborated this speculation, each saying they were onboard ships where people were injured or passed away. “I was on this cruise. my buddy was standing next to the guy at the casino and he said the guy just fell over backwards and hit his head pretty bad,” said Casual (@casual.ow).
This post, which has garnered 165,500 views and 112 comments, has unleashed a flood of other non-sunshine-related memories.
Shaylnrogers (@shaylnrogers) said, “Just got off yesterday… 2 deaths and the cabin 3 doors down from us was drug searched on the first night.”
Then come the Dateline-style stories. “I'll bet it was nothing near as bad as what happened on the Alaskan cruise I took where a man beat his wife to death (loudly) in the room down the hall from mine—while his kids and family members were pounding hysterically on the outside of the door. The stuff of nightmares,” says Maeve.1212 (@maeve.1212).
NBC and the U.S. Department of Justice verify a tragic event like this did occur. Kenneth Manzanares of Utah was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison after murdering his wife. She'd asked for a divorce.
How Often Do People Die On Cruise Ships?
According to Newsweek, hundreds of people die on cruises each year, “roughly one death per 150,000 guests.” When a death occurs, the FBI is always involved, per Newsweek. This doesn't “automatically imply suspicious circumstances,” it is a “standard protocol” for Americans who die at sea, or a death that occurs on an American-flagged ship.
While most deaths that occur onboard are from natural causes such as heart attacks, or a disease at an advanced stage, someone dying aboard a cruise ship does pose a logistical problem. That's why cruise ships have morgues.
Repatriation can be complicated depending on a country's laws and the details surrounding the death. “Each country has its own rules and regulations about accepting bodies, declaring cause of death and repatriating remains,” explains Cruise Critic.
Because death on vacation can have complex emotional and paperwork ramifications, most cruise lines have staff to help navigate the process. These individuals are trained to help deal with the details of repatriating a body and contacting a funeral home. But repatriation can be expensive, so buying travel insurance that includes repatriation costs can be helpful: especially if sailing with an ill or older companion.
