Hayden Panettiere’s Death: Presence of Narcan, Medications and Ex-Boyfriend Raise Questions
The sudden death of Hayden Panettiere has become the focus of a widening investigation as federal agents join local authorities searching for answers. Attention is now centered on medications recovered from the apartment, the reported presence of Narcan and the people who were with the actress during her final moments. With toxicology testing still underway, investigators have yet to determine what caused her unexpected death at 36.
DEA Joins the Investigation
The federal Drug Enforcement Administration has joined the investigation into the sudden death of actress Hayden Panettiere, 36. Panettiere was found unresponsive and in cardiac arrest on August 16 at an apartment complex in Greenville, South Carolina. Local police remain in charge of the investigation, with the DEA assisting as authorities examine medications recovered from the residence.
Emergency Call Mentioned a Possible Overdose
First responders arrived at the Judson Mill Lofts at approximately 1:50 p.m. following an emergency services call. Dispatch audio obtained by CNN included a reference to a «possible overdose» while emergency personnel attempted to revive Panettiere. The communication also indicated that «CPR is in progress.» Despite those efforts, the Heroes and Nashville actress was pronounced dead at the scene.
Cause of Death Remains Undetermined
Investigators have not established what caused Panettiere’s death. A preliminary autopsy conducted by the Greenville County Coroner’s Office reportedly found no evidence of physical trauma or foul play. The official cause and manner of death remain deferred while authorities await toxicology results, which could provide additional information about whether any substances contributed to the cardiac arrest.
Narcan Was Reportedly Found Inside
Authorities reportedly recovered Narcan inside the apartment, adding another element to the investigation. Narcan, also known as naloxone, is used to rapidly reverse an opioid overdose. Its presence does not establish that Panettiere suffered an overdose or that opioids caused her death. Investigators will need the toxicology findings before determining whether drugs played any role in what happened.
Nine Medications Recovered From the Scene
Panettiere’s former boyfriend Brian Hickerson provided responding officers with a bag containing nine different medications belonging to the actress, according to a heavily redacted police report. The specific medications were blacked out in the publicly available document. The DEA is assisting authorities as they attempt to trace medications recovered from the apartment and determine whether any were distributed illegally.
Brian Hickerson Was Present
Hickerson and his brother, Zach Hickerson, were reportedly present when Panettiere went into cardiac arrest. Officers documented their behavior during the emergency response, noting that Zach appeared visibly emotional during resuscitation efforts. According to the report, Brian «did not become emotional» until medical personnel officially pronounced Panettiere dead. Authorities have not accused him of causing her death.
Their Troubled History Draws Attention
Brian’s presence has attracted additional scrutiny because of his turbulent history with Panettiere. Their on-again, off-again relationship previously involved domestic violence allegations, and Hickerson was convicted in 2021 in connection with violence against the actress and served 45 days in jail. Despite that history, investigators have reported no evidence of foul play in Panettiere’s death.
Panettiere Had Discussed Substance Abuse
Months before her death, Panettiere spoke openly while promoting her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, about her history with substance abuse. She described receiving a «happy pill» from someone on her management team when she was 16 and said she suspected it was an amphetamine. She later characterized that experience as a «gateway drug» in her struggles with pharmaceuticals and alcohol.
Chronic Pain
Panettiere had discussed serious chronic back pain connected to injuries sustained during her acting career, including damage to her vertebrae. She described experiencing severe neurological symptoms and recalled waking up with «nothing but pins and needles from the waist down.» Her previous medical and substance-use history has not been officially connected to her death, and toxicology testing remains pending.
Her Mother Raises Concerns About Hickerson
Panettiere’s mother and former manager, Lesley Vogel, publicly questioned Hickerson’s continued presence in her daughter’s life. «This person in her life that we have been trying to get rid of for quite some time was with her at her death and that was Brian Hickerson,» Vogel told NBC News, while pointing to concerns the family had held for years.
Toxicology Could Provide Crucial Answers
Vogel added: «There is a lot of history in the past that Brian has enabled Hayden many times and this is why her father and I had been concerned for a long time about him.» Despite those concerns, authorities have not accused Hickerson of involvement in Panettiere’s death. Investigators are now awaiting toxicology findings as the DEA assists with the medication investigation.
