Woman goes to Walmart. Then she gets accused of stealing—her own sweatshirt she came in with: ‘I bought this at Disney World’
A Walmart shopper says she was stunned after being accused of shoplifting a sweater she brought into one of the retailer's locations.
Tiffany Nicole (@lifebytiffanynicole) published a video delineating the situation. She says it culminated in her leaving, despite staff admonishments and threats that law enforcement would be called.
Walmart Sweater Theft
Tiffany begins her video by speaking directly into the camera while recording inside of a vehicle.
“Please tell me how I was just accused of stealing my own sweatshirt at Walmart,” she begins. “I went to self-checkout. I literally went 'cause you guys know I was trying to get bins for my car cleans.”
She shares how she was at self-checkout and placed her jacket that she walked in with, “because I always get cold at Walmart,” next to her and the phone was on top.
Then, she states, “And so I scan the two items and then I put them to the side. And I start going in my purse to take out my card. She comes up to me and she's like, ‘Oh so you don't want these items?' And I was like, ‘Oh this is my phone and my jacket.'”
However, the employee expressed doubt over Nicole's ownership of the Minnie Mouse-branded clothing item.
“‘That's your jacket?' And I was like, ‘Yeah.' And she was like, ‘Can I see that because that really looks like one of our merchandise,'”
Nicole insisted it was her own jacket, and added that she was attempting to be “super casual” about the situation and chalking it up to a misunderstanding.
They Threaten to Call Someone
As far as the employee was concerned, there was nothing “casual” about their exchange. She proceeded to grill Nicole, asking her if she was certain that she didn't pick it up from somewhere in the store.
“Are you sure you walked in with this?” they allegedly asked.
Again, Nicole averred that she was the owner of the Minnie Mouse sweater.
“I bought this at Disney World. Like, this is my jacket, my sweatshirt. I just walked in, check the cameras … I don't know what you want me to do.”
Following this, the employee walks away from the self-checkout aisle, leaving Nicole to pack up her items. And as she began to saunter her way out of the store, the same employee made a beeline in her direction. This time, the Walmart worker had a manager in tow, who also had some questions about Nicole's sweatshirt.
According to Nicole, the supervisor said they needed to “take [her] to the back room. So that they could type in whatever number they think is on … the tag of [her] sweatshirt to verify that it's not one of their items.”
“At this point I am getting very, very agitated. OK? I proceed to [expletive] show them that this is a Disney tag. And I honestly was like, ‘Guys, I'm not doing this. I know I didn't steal. I have my receipt. I walked in with this and I'm walking out. Like you cannot stop me.'”
She Says Workers Threatened To Call The Cops
“They are like screaming at me, saying they're gonna call the police. That I have to go in the back room, that they have to check the merchandise and all of these things,” she continues. “And long story short, I just [expletive] walked out while they're like screaming at me. Saying they're going to call the police and truthfully, I'm still in the parking lot. So please, show up.”
She then lets out a loud sigh.
“Oh my goodness. I am so freaking frustrated. Literally guys, this is the freaking sweatshirt. I had just gotten it at [expletive] Magic Kingdom,” she says, holding up the Disney-themed sweater.
Then, she clarifies that she purchased it at the hotel she stayed at while she was visiting Disney's Coronado Hotel.
Other Walmart Customers Say Employees Have Wrongfully Accused Them Of Stealing
There are other instances of overly zealous Walmart workers accusing shoppers of trying to pilfer items. One of these more notable instances involved an Alabama woman, Lesleigh Nurse, who won $2.1 million in damages from the retailer.
CBS News reported that in 2016, Nurse was halted by a Walmart employee when she was attempting to leave the store. She was accused of trying to walk out with groceries after paying for her products. However, Nurse explained that the kiosk froze after accepting her money.
Employees of the store didn't buy her response and notified local law enforcement. Upon arriving at the scene, police arrested Nurse, and what ensued was a drawn-out back-and-forth between the woman and Walmart.
Nurse filed a suit against one of the Walmart workers, but had her case dismissed after they failed to show up in court. Afterwards, Nurse began receiving legal correspondence from a Florida firm demanding she cough up $200 to settle the matter. This amount was significantly more than the $48 worth of items Walmart accused Nurse of robbing.
This detail highlighted a practice that became a highlight of her case: large retailers pressuring supposed shoplifters to cough up cash. Testimony in Nurse's case featured criticisms of this tactic, arguing that Walmart garnered hundreds of millions of dollars in extra cash from store shoppers.
‘Walmart Is Stealing'
Another Walmart customer posted to Reddit's r/legaladvice sub stating that, like Nicole, they were also “falsely accused of shoplifting.” They wrote that they went to a store with their husband to make a return, only to discover the return window had expired. Since they were already in the store, they decided to do some more shopping.
But while doing so, they mentioned several employees were eyeballing them. And after making two purchases at a self-checkout terminal, they were immediately blocked from exiting the premises by employees. What's more is that after the customers proved they had paid for their items, they claimed Walmart staff members still treated them aggressively. So confrontational, in fact, that one of the employees acted like they were going to get in a fight with the shopper's husband.
Atlanta Black Star also featured an incident involving a Walmart shopper who also failed to complete a return. Upon learning he wouldn't be getting money back for the microwave he brought into the store, he began shopping around. Then, he purchased another microwave and tried leaving the store.
But he was stopped by workers, and one speculated aloud that he was trying to exit with a free microwave. The customer recorded the interaction and captured the worker's face in real time after he proves that he, in fact, did purchase the second microwave.
