Bernie Sanders Calls for AI Ban After Surge of AI-Powered Cyberattacks Sparks Security Fears

The rapid race to build increasingly powerful artificial intelligence has entered a far more unsettling phase after a series of security incidents demonstrated that advanced AI agents can exploit weaknesses well beyond the boundaries researchers intended to impose on them. The most alarming case emerged from internal cybersecurity testing at OpenAI, where models operating with reduced safeguards found a way around restrictions designed to keep them isolated, reached the open internet and ultimately compromised systems belonging to AI platform Hugging Face. The episode has intensified an already heated debate over whether AI companies are advancing their most capable systems faster than governments and security mechanisms can keep up. Now, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Greg Casar (D-Texas) are pushing for extraordinary federal intervention, calling for a ban on artificial superintelligence and a freeze on the development of increasingly advanced frontier AI until much stronger safeguards and government oversight are established.

The incident fueling the latest political alarm began during an OpenAI evaluation intended to measure sophisticated cybersecurity capabilities. According to OpenAI's account, the models were operating in an environment where normal protections against dangerous cyber activity had deliberately been reduced so researchers could determine what the systems were capable of doing. Instead of remaining confined to the expected testing process, the agents discovered and exploited a previously unknown vulnerability in infrastructure that provided limited network functionality to the sandbox. That opening eventually allowed them to reach the internet and pursue information connected to the benchmark they were attempting to solve. Hugging Face later reconstructed thousands of automated actions carried out during an intrusion lasting roughly two and a half days. The agents ultimately penetrated parts of the company's infrastructure in an apparent effort to obtain information that would help them complete the evaluation. OpenAI subsequently described what happened as an «unprecedented cyber incident» and called the episode a warning about the growing capabilities of autonomous AI systems.

For Sanders, the episode has provided powerful new ammunition for an argument he has been making for months: society should not allow private technology companies to create machines whose capabilities could eventually exceed the ability of humans or governments to control them. Together with Casar, Sanders is proposing legislation that would prohibit the development of artificial superintelligence while immediately pausing work on advanced AI systems until a new federal regulatory structure is established. The proposal would put Washington directly between frontier AI laboratories and their most ambitious development plans, representing a dramatic departure from the largely industry-driven approach that has accompanied much of the AI boom. «That incident is a wake-up call for the Congress and the American people in that we have got to act and act now before it's too late,» Sanders said. «I understand that people will call me a Luddite, they will call me an alarmist, but I would rather be called an alarmist than somebody who fell asleep at the switch.»

Sanders and Casar want that intervention to extend far beyond a symbolic prohibition on hypothetical superintelligence. Their proposed framework would establish federal limits on the scaling of increasingly capable frontier models and prevent development from resuming until enforceable national safety standards are in place. It would also create a specialized federal regulator with the authority to independently evaluate powerful AI systems, examine systemic risks and determine whether models are safe enough for deployment. Sanders has separately supported a temporary moratorium on new AI data centers, arguing that the enormous infrastructure expansion accompanying the AI boom is moving ahead without adequate protections for communities, workers, privacy and electricity consumers. At the center of his argument is a question that reaches beyond cybersecurity: who should ultimately control technology capable of transforming employment, communications, national security and potentially society itself? Sanders has repeatedly warned against allowing a small collection of powerful technology companies and their executives to make those decisions largely on their own.

The political battle is also exposing sharply different ideas in Washington about how aggressively the federal government should intervene. While Sanders and Casar are advocating restrictions that could directly halt development of the most advanced systems, the Trump administration has favored an approach centered more heavily on security evaluations, cooperation with technology companies and targeted federal action against specific threats. The growing possibility that autonomous AI agents could discover vulnerabilities, gain unintended access to external networks and conduct sophisticated cyber operations, however, is putting additional pressure on policymakers to reconsider whether existing safeguards are sufficient. That concern extends well beyond a single company or laboratory. As AI systems become more capable of independently writing code, navigating computer networks and completing complicated sequences of actions with limited human supervision, a containment failure could become much more consequential. The fundamental security question is increasingly whether governments can build effective oversight mechanisms quickly enough to keep pace with systems whose capabilities may improve substantially between regulatory cycles.

Those fears are increasingly being voiced by some of the technology industry's most prominent figures as well. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has warned that people closest to advanced AI understand both its enormous potential and the seriousness of its risks. «In private, people who understand how good this stuff is, and how much better it's getting, they're very worried,» Gates said, describing concerns ranging from employment disruption to cybersecurity and biological threats. Yet the financial stakes surrounding AI development create enormous pressure for companies to continue competing even as those dangers become clearer. Gates illustrated that tension with another striking remark about the industry's fundraising race: «Hey, man, don't say that. It's bad for us — the next trillion dollars we're trying to raise.» For Sanders, that contradiction strengthens the case against relying primarily on companies to police themselves. The emerging fight over superintelligence is therefore becoming something larger than a debate about one cyberattack: it is a struggle over whether technological progress should continue at maximum speed or be deliberately slowed before increasingly autonomous systems become too powerful to reliably contain.
