20 Wild Things Travelers Endured Before Passports Existed

I admit I’m not a fan of the mental energy that going to the airport requires, because you have to go through so much. But a lot of that “so much” actually came from centuries of people trying to figure out who should be allowed to travel, where they could go, and what they had to prove along the way. Long before we had neat little passport booklets and immigration counters, travelers dealt with quarantine islands, city gate tolls, handwritten passes, vaccination checks, and documents that literally described the shape of their noses. When I think of all that, taking my shoes off at airport security doesn’t feel quite as ridiculous! Here are 20 things travelers had to do before passports became standard.
