No matter how much I swear to be a non-soda person, I can’t bring myself to turn down a can of Coke. Put one beside my meal—preferably ice-cold—and all my declarations about “not really drinking soda” go down the drain and become highly negotiable. And if I had been around before 1960, I probably would’ve had an even harder time sticking to my word. Before a handful of national brands came to dominate store shelves, Americans had all sorts of regional sodas to choose from: bitter celery drinks, bright green lime pop, supposed hangover cures, and even a lemon-lime soda containing an actual mood stabilizer. Some were huge in their hometowns before disappearing almost completely. So, in honor of my very flimsy commitment to avoiding soda, here are 20 forgotten drinks Americans once loved!
