There was once a time in my life when I was inexplicably fascinated with flags—symbolism and all that. At a young age, I knew how the stars on the American flag stood for the 50 states, how the Philippine flag is hoisted upside down during wartime (or flown at half-mast when the country is mourning), and how Australia basically has three different official flags.
