In the early 19th century, if you needed surgery or a body part amputated, you had to go through the operation without anesthesia. Yep, you’d be fully awake for the most painful operation of your life and you would have to hope your doctor knew what he was doing. Luckily for some, they had Dr. Robert Liston, the fastest surgeon of his time. He could amputate a leg in under thirty seconds, which was not only impressive, but life-saving. He’s probably one of the coolest doctors I’ve ever encountered, so let’s take a deeper look at his accomplishments and fascinating life.
