It’s one thing to believe you’re pregnant and then discover that you’re not. It’s quite another to be Queen of England, your doctors believe you’re pregnant too, your whole court is waiting for you to give birth, and people are already celebrating your impending motherhood! I don’t know if I could deal with that kind of stress, but this is basically what happened to Mary I in 1555. Mary displayed all the telltale symptoms of pregnancy and was convinced she would bear her husband, Philip of Spain, an heir. The only catch? The baby didn’t arrive. Today, we call Mary’s situation a “phantom pregnancy,” but we have no way of knowing what was happening in her body nearly 500 years ago. Not only that, it seems as though Mary experienced phantom pregnancy twice, about two years apart.
