Elon Musk, the world's richest man, has reportedly spent $366 million on political activity during the 2026 U.S. midterm election cycle, including $276 million since July to help Republicans retain control of Congress. The spending comes as Democrats' chances of retaking the House of Representatives and Senate have improved significantly over the past three months, and Republicans are worried. Musk's donations will. Most likely make him the largest political donor in this year's races, investing a fortune to keep MAGA in power.
In terms of political spending, I'm going to do a lot less in the future,
Musk in 2025, claiming he would not spend on this years midterms.
Millions directed toward Republican campaigns
The vast majority of Musk's donations have been directly pumped into Republican campaigns. Musk's recent spending includes $158 million donated to the Senate Leadership Fund, a super PAC aligned with Senate Majority Leader John Thune, a South Dakota Republican. Another $20 million went to the Congressional Leadership Fund, which supports House Republicans and is aligned with Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana. Musk also directed $76 million to America PAC, his own political organization, which is supporting Republican candidates in seven battleground states and nearly three dozen House races.
If Democrats take control of Washington and win key gubernatorial and attorney general races this November, then America risks becoming a socialist, woke and borderless country

Spending to impact Texas race
Musk's third-quarter donations also included $10 million for the Lone Star Liberty PAC, which supports Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton's U.S. Senate campaign. Paxton is running against Democrat James Talarico in a race where recent polls have shown the candidates in a dead heat. Musk gave another $10 million to the Republican Governors Association and $2 million to the Republican Attorneys General Association, extending his financial support beyond congressional races to Republican campaigns at the state level.
The latest donations were confirmed by a spokesman for America PAC. Much of the spending is expected to become public when super PACs disclose their third-quarter finances on Thursday. Musk has also contributed money through organizations that do not disclose their donors, according to a New York Times report cited by Reuters, meaning the publicly reported figures may not capture the full extent of his political activity.
Democrats vying for investigations
Musk's political spending comes as Democrats in the House have called for investigations into his government contracts through SpaceX, the aerospace company he leads, and his work overseeing the Department of Government Efficiency under President Donald Trump. Those relationships could become a focus of congressional scrutiny if Democrats regain control of the House in November. Musk's financial support for Republican candidates therefore comes as the election could determine the extent of congressional oversight of his businesses and his work within the Trump administration.
Previous election spending

Musk spent approximately $290 million during the previous election cycle, when Trump defeated former vice president Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election. His spending during the current cycle has already exceeded that amount, according to figures provided by an America PAC spokesman. However, roughly $90 million of the current cycle's spending was directed toward activities connected to the previous election or other political issues, including an unsuccessful candidate in the Wisconsin Supreme Court race and a controversial program offering $1 million payments to registered voters who signed a petition supporting free speech and gun rights.
Midterms a tight race
The 2026 midterm elections will determine control of both chambers of Congress, with Republicans seeking to maintain their majorities and Democrats attempting to regain power. Musk's donations are concentrated in organizations designed to support Republican Senate and House candidates, as well as state-level campaigns. America PAC is also working in battleground states and competitive House districts, where spending could help candidates reach voters and organize campaigns. The scale of Musk's contributions places him among the most influential financial backers in this year's elections.
Musk's total political spending for the current election cycle began accumulating on Jan. 1, 2025, and includes contributions beyond the latest round of donations. The $276 million directed since July represents a substantial portion of his overall spending, with most of that money going to Republican-aligned groups. The full breakdown of third-quarter donations is expected to become clearer when the relevant campaign finance disclosures are released. The outcome of the November elections will determine whether the spending helps Republicans retain control of Congress or whether Democrats win the majorities they are seeking.
