Apollo 13’s Jim Lovell dead at 97

Famed astronaut Jim Lovell, who commanded the Apollo 13 mission and was forced to abandon his attempt to land on the Moon in 1970, has died, NASA has confirmed. Lovell, whose courage was praised worldwide and by his peers on the mission that made him famous, later made history again when he was portrayed in the 1995 film Apollo 13 by Tom Hanks, under the direction of Ron Howard. Jim Lovell was 97.
