The investigation is still in its early stages and many questions remain unanswered.
A vast operation
The Italian authorities have intensified their investigation into the sinking of the luxury yacht Bayesian. Following a vast search operation, the tragedy claimed the lives of seven people and could result in criminal charges being brought against the captain, who is among those who survived the sinking.
Fifteen people rescued
A violent storm recently caused the Bayesian yacht to sink off the coast of Sicily. The Italian coastguard, local emergency services and divers launched a vast search and rescue operation. Fifteen people were rescued, but seven victims were found after several days of searching.
Manslaughter
The investigation is continuing, and it has been revealed that several charges, including manslaughter, could be brought against the yacht’s captain, who is a survivor of the sinking.
The tragic events
Finding the bodies at a depth of 50 meters was a difficult task for the divers, but now that the operation is over, autopsies will soon be carried out to shed light on the tragic events.
The deceased
The deceased include British entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, Jonathan Bloomer, Chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife Judy Bloomer, New York lawyer Christopher J. Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo, and Canadian-Antiguan chef Recaldo Thomas.
The captain
Prosecutors questioned the yacht’s captain, James Cutfield, as well as survivors. The crew are not obliged to remain in Sicily for the duration of the investigation, as no formal charges have yet been laid. However, their presence will probably be required in the coming months, as the investigation is still in its early stages.
A burst of air
It is likely that an Overtime caused the accident, but questions remain about the condition of the vessel, with some questioning the integrity of its structure and the safety of its measurements.
Unsinkable?
The yacht, built in 2008 by Perini Navigation, has been declared “unsinkable”, a word that had also been given to the ship of the terible Titanic tragedy. Although some claim that superyachts are designed to withstand extreme conditions, experts dispute this claim.
Still in its early stages
The investigation is still in its early stages and many questions remain unanswered, as the yacht’s black box, essential to understanding the causes of the sinking, has not yet been found.
