Questioned by Stephen Colbert (from a distance, since Colbert is on COVID protocol) Jada was keen to correct her comments about her relationship with her husband, Will Smith, revealing a relationship perhaps more complex than we imagined when she first revealed it.

"For my own healing I just call us life partners, but he's my dude." she says at first. Then, Jada says she's very surprised this is getting so much attention, and clarifies why she and Will Smith are separated... but together.

"I came into my mariage with Will so young and so all of the idealism that I had about husband and mariage[…]," she then explains. The star says it was after years of therapy that she questioned her relationship, and the fact that at 26, in her opinion, it was very young to get married.

"Learning to break down [through therapy] all these romanticized fantasies that I came into this marriage with and really learning to accept the reality of what it is and just seeing Will in a brand new light."

When Colbert asked her why they waited until now to announce their split, Jada said that before that, she just wasn't ready to do it: "I was’nt ready. Listen, uncoupling consciously is a very dificult thing, right? Do I really want to be divorced, do I want to separated? Then the Oscar cames and it’s crazy like how intense event can brings people together because once the Oscars happened Will and I got closer."

The intense events of the Oscars have made things a little clearer for Jada, who says the Oscars were a real revelation for her. In fact, she now calls Chris Rock's joke about her hair "The holy joke" and the slap Will gave Rock "The holy slap"!

"I didn’t go at the Oscars neccessarly as Will’s wife but when the event occurred, I knew in that moment that I wasn’t gonna leave his side, and I knew at that moment that I didn’t go to that theater as his wife but I was leaving as his wife and I was going to stand by his side no matter what."

But what does Will think about all this? Well... Will Smith seems to support Jada in everything she says, claiming that reading the book sort of woke him up. The actor seems to feel intense compassion for his wife, as he wrote her a letter, excerpts of which were revealed during an interview with Jada on On Purpose with Jay Shetty.

"You are one of one, a rare blend of power and delicate sensitivity. I know it wasn't easy to excavate the depths in that way. I applaud and honor you. If I had read this book 30 years ago, I definitely would have hugged you more." Wow... Worthy, by Jada Pinkett-Smith, is on sale now!
