On February 28, North Korean state media published a photo of Kim Ju Ae, the daughter of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, firing a rifle with a scope. This previously unseen photo fuels speculation that the teenager could succeed her father as the country’s leader.
Kim Jong Un presented new precision rifles to senior party and military officials, KCNA reported, without mentioning Ju-ae, describing the gesture as a sign of appreciation and “absolute trust.”
The North Korean leader then went with the officials in question to a shooting range, where he also fired a rifle and took a group photo, the news agency reported.
A possible use of AI
In total, North Korea published 27 photos of the event. However, a CNN analysis of four of these photos indicates that one of them shows signs of possible AI use, namely the one in which Kim Ju-ae is handling a sniper rifle, looking through the scope, her finger on the trigger.
The girl is wearing a leather jacket, an item of clothing that she and her father often wear at major political events. According to some experts, this garment symbolizes authority and legitimacy, reports France24.
Other photos from the event show Kim Ju Ae watching through binoculars while her father fires a shot, or helping to hand out rifles to other dignitaries in attendance.
The fourth representative of the Kim dynasty
In mid-February, Pyongyang appeared to have begun the process of designating Kim Ju Ae as her father’s successor, according to the South Korean news agency KCNA.
The young woman could therefore become the fourth representative of the dynasty to rule North Korea since 1950.
She is also the only one of the leader’s three alleged children to have appeared in public, reports BFMTV.
Several highly publicized appearances
“The South Korean National Intelligence Service (NIS) believes that Kim Ju Ae is about to be designated as the successor,” said South Korean lawmaker Lee Seong-kweun in mid-February, after a briefing by the NIS. Kim Ju Ae, whose exact age is unknown, has made several high-profile appearances alongside her father in recent months, including at missile tests andthe February 26 military parade marking the end of the ruling Workers’ Party congress.
Between personality cult and state secrets
Given that the photos show the teenager knowing how to handle a rifle, this suggests “that she is indeed receiving training to become the successor,” Yang Moo-jin, former president of the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul, told AFP.Yang Moo-jin, former president of the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul, told AFP.
The Kim dynasty
The Kim dynasty has ruled the reclusive country with an iron fist since its founding in 1948, with Kim Jong Un representing the third generation, following his father and grandfather. A cult of personality centered on their lineage dominates daily life in this isolated country.
Kim Jong Un, 42, has been in power since the death of his father, Kim Jong Il, in December 2011.
The exact age of Kim Jong Un
Kim Jong Un’s exact age, date of marriage, and even the number of children he has remain unknown to this day, according to
BFMTV. Following the shooting range event, the KCNA news agency also announced that Kim Jong Un’s powerful sister, Kim Yo Jong, would head the party’s General Affairs Department, a role that analysts describe asKim Yo Jong would head the party’s General Affairs Department, a role that analysts describe as comparable to that of party secretary general.
