Mark Carney Fires Back at Trump Administration: «Stop Doing Memes» and Get Serious About Trade

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada remains prepared to restart negotiations with the United States, but Washington must change its approach first. Following weeks of escalating tensions, Carney urged the Trump administration to abandon online provocations and return to serious diplomacy as both countries search for a possible path out of their worsening trade conflict.

Carney delivered an unusually direct rebuke of the Trump administration while explaining what would be required to resume negotiations. «When the Americans stop doing memes, stop throwing shade, stop trying to be tough and start being serious about having those discussions, we can have those discussions. But look, it’s not constructive, but that is their democracy».

The confrontation reached a critical point on August 21 when Canadian negotiators walked away from the bargaining table. Ottawa concluded that Washington’s latest conditions offered no acceptable route toward an agreement. Carney described key American demands as «uneconomic» and «unfair», arguing that Canada could not accept a deal that endangered important sectors of its economy.

Among Ottawa’s biggest concerns were potential consequences for Canada’s automotive, steel and aluminum industries. Canadian officials argued that Washington’s demands could weaken those sectors or reduce them to extensions of American corporations. Carney has insisted that Canada wants an agreement, but not one requiring the country to sacrifice its economic independence or national sovereignty.

The Trump administration has presented a dramatically different account of why negotiations collapsed. Vice President JD Vance, trade adviser Howard Lutnick and other American officials blamed Ottawa, portraying the proposed agreement as highly favorable. They accused Canada of manufacturing reasons to abandon negotiations instead of accepting what Washington characterized as an exceptionally advantageous trade arrangement.

Following the breakdown, the dispute increasingly moved from negotiating rooms to social media. Trump and members of his administration began publicly mocking Canada, its leadership and military capabilities. White House accounts also circulated memes and provocative posts aimed at Canadian officials, prompting Carney to criticize the increasingly personal nature of the confrontation between the neighboring countries.

Carney particularly objected to American officials publicly ridiculing Canada’s defense capabilities. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent mocked the country’s submarine fleet, while other administration figures targeted Canada online. Responding to the increasingly unusual attacks from senior U.S. officials, Carney dismissed the behavior with a short but pointed assessment: «It’s beneath their office».

Trump has also transformed Lake Ontario into a symbol of the dispute, promoting the name «Lake America» and circulating altered or AI-generated imagery mocking Canadian objections. Posts included cartoon «Donald Ducks» patrolling the water and an AI depiction of Trump replacing a Lake Ontario sign, further intensifying Carney’s criticism of Washington’s social-media approach.

Behind the online confrontation are increasingly serious economic consequences. Washington has imposed 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion in Canadian imports and threatened additional 50% duties on Canadian-built vehicles and auto parts. Canada has promised a «dollar-for-dollar» response, with another wave of retaliatory tariffs scheduled to begin September 8 across numerous American products.

Trump has continued pressuring Ottawa through Truth Social, declaring: «Canada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one!!!» He has also threatened Canada over its relationship with China, warning that Washington could impose a sweeping 100% tariff on Canadian imports if Ottawa reaches a trade arrangement that allows Chinese products to circumvent American restrictions.

Despite the hostile rhetoric, Carney has deliberately left the door open to renewed negotiations. Canada remains prepared to seek a mutually beneficial agreement, but Carney says sovereignty and strategic industries are not bargaining chips. His message to Washington is ultimately straightforward: abandon the memes and political posturing, return to substantive diplomacy, and Canada is prepared to talk.
