A Russian overnight assault on Kyiv has damaged one of the most important religious monuments in Eastern Christianity, setting part of the historic Dormition Cathedral ablaze inside the UNESCO-listed Kyiv Pechersk Lavra complex. Ukrainian officials said the attack was carried out during a massive wave of missiles and drones launched across the country, with the cathedral’s roof suffering extensive fire damage. President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strike as «one of Russia’s most serious crimes against Christian culture to date,» while accusing Moscow of deliberately targeting the area. The cathedral, whose origins date back to the 11th century, has survived centuries of invasions, wars, fires and destruction, making the latest attack especially significant for Ukraine’s cultural and religious heritage.
