‘Rust’ gunsmith sentenced to 18 months in prison

The judge responsible for the judgment has decided to impose the most severe sentence on Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, Rust’s gunsmith, for her role in the tragic incident that occurred during the film’s shooting on October 21, 2021.

This event unfortunately led to the death of director of photography Halyna Hutchins and serious injuries to director Joel Souza.

The jury previously found Gutierrez Reed guilty of manslaughter following the events, which also involved actor Alec Baldwin.

During her address to the court, Gutierrez-Reed expressed her sadness and acknowledged the loss by the friends and family of Halyna Hutchins. She also stated that the media portrayal of her as a complete monster did not accurately reflect her true personality.

Despite Gutierrez-Reed’s words, the judge was not convinced and based her judgment more on Gutierrez-Reed’s lack of remorse, as well as on audio recordings of phone calls from the prison where she was awaiting sentence. In these recordings, Gutierrez-Reed minimized her culpability in the events.

Alec Baldwin was also charged with manslaughter, separate from the Gutierrez-Reed case. Baldwin, who has pleaded not guilty, will face his own trial on July 10.

If found guilty, Baldwin faces up to 18 months in prison as well.
