“The Girlfriend Who Didn’t Exist”: Manti Te’o tells his story

The documentary about Manti Te’o, a Heisman Trophy finalist in his final year at Notre Dame and a player for the New Orleans Saints, was dropped on the Netflix platform last Tuesday.

It tells, through the docu, a tale of a false identity on socials, which is called “catfishing”.

The documentary is called Untold: The Girlfriend Who Didn’t Exist, and it summarizes the mental problems (anxiety) that Te’o went through because of the death of his grandmother and his fake girlfriend, who didn’t really exist.

This happened ten years ago (2012), and this nightmare bothered Te’o so much, that he was unable to lead Notre Dame to the national championship, losing 42-14 to Alabama.

Following his college career, he joined the NFL and the anxiety attacks became regular.

All in all, Te’o, who was defrauded of millions, was hesitant for a long time to accept the production of this documentary since he was ashamed of himself.

“I was still ashamed. I was still embarrassed,” he said in an interview with Time.
