1936
The Head of the Vatican was born on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He became the first Pope to originate from the American continent.
His real name
He is known by the name Francis, of course, but his baptismal name is Jorge Mario Bergoglio. He took the name “Francis” in memory of Francis of Assisi.
His family
He is part of a family of five children, all known by the name Bergoglio.
Solemn profession and priestly ordination
On December 13, 1969, he became a member of the clergy through priestly ordination, while he received his solemn profession on April 22, 1973. He also became a cardinal of the Catholic Church in February 2001.
Election
On March 13, 2013, at the age of 76, he was appointed as Pope, after his predecessor decided to resign, that is, Pope Benedict XVI.
