Tiger Woods has reached a plea agreement that will allow him to avoid a prison sentence but will keep him off the road for several years.

On Wednesday morning, the golf legend pleaded no contest to reduced charges of reckless driving and refusing to submit to a legal test. The case stems from a car accident that occurred in Florida last March. Woods had initially been charged with driving under the influence and refusing to provide a urine sample. He had pleaded not guilty at the time.

As part of the court-approved agreement, the golfer's driver's license will be suspended for five years. Woods will also have to pay a fine of 1,500 U.S. dollars. Judge Darren Steele issued a particularly stern warning: if he gets behind the wheel despite this ban, he could immediately return to jail. This decision brings to a close a case that had put Woods in the spotlight for reasons quite different from his athletic achievements.

The 50-year-old had acknowledged after his arrest that he understood the full gravity of the situation and announced his intention to focus on his health.

An Accident in Florida

The incident dates back to March, when Woods was involved in an accident in Florida.

According to Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek, the golfer reportedly attempted to pass a vehicle traveling in front of him. His car then reportedly struck a pickup truck before rolling over.

Police administered a breathalyzer test to Woods, which reportedly showed no alcohol consumption. However, the situation became more complicated when he allegedly refused to provide a urine sample at the police station.

It was this refusal, in particular, that led to one of the charges he faced in court.

Medications Found on Woods

After his arrest, Tiger Woods reportedly admitted to police that he had taken a few pills. According to an arrest affidavit reported by The Athletic, two hydrocodone pills were also reportedly found in his pocket.

Following the incident, the famous golfer posted a statement on social media in which he acknowledged the seriousness of his situation. Woods also indicated that he would seek help and that he wanted to focus his efforts on his health.

The plea agreement reached several months later ultimately allowed him to avoid prison, provided he complied with the various requirements imposed by the court.

Vanessa Trump in Court

Tiger Woods was not alone when he appeared in court on Wednesday morning. His partner, Vanessa Trump, accompanied him to court.

A former wife of Donald Trump Jr., to whom she was married for over a decade, Vanessa has been dating Woods since 2024. Her presence alongside the golfer therefore drew attention during this important stage of the legal proceedings.

Despite his recent troubles, Woods remains one of the wealthiest athletes in history. According to Forbes estimates, his net worth is approximately 1.5 billion U.S. dollars, while his career earnings exceed two billion from all sources combined.

This isn't his first driving incident

This incident inevitably brings to mind another difficult episode in Tiger Woods' life. In 2017, police found him asleep at the wheel of his car. The officers described a man whose speech was extremely slow and slurred.

Woods explained that he had taken prescription medication and maintained that alcohol played no role in the incident. Instead, he cited an unexpected reaction to his medication. Following this arrest, the champion was sentenced to one year of probation.

He also completed a diversion program for driving under the influence and performed 50 hours of community service.

It should be noted that even though he ultimately avoided jail time, Tiger Woods will now have to deal with a significant penalty that will prevent him from driving for five years.
