Donald Trump has chosen Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio as his running mate for the 2024 presidential election.
40 years old
If elected, J.D. Vance will become the third-youngest Vice President in U.S. history as he approaches 40.
Veteran
A former Marine Corps officer, Vance is a veteran of the Iraq war.
America First
Vance embraces Trump’s America First ideology. Contrary to the expectations of some Republicans who were hoping for a more temperate figure to attract undecided voters, JD Vance was not chosen as Vice President to moderate the Republican Party, according to several observers.
"Never Trumper"
A former critic of Trump, having even dubbed him “America’s Hitler”, Vance, has allied himself with Trump and takes some pretty extreme positions on abortion, voting rights, in relation to the party line if Trump is elected and Project 2025!
Political pivot
According to the New York Times, Vance’s wife clerked for Justices John G. Roberts and Brett Kavanaugh before the latter was appointed to the Supreme Court. Kavanaugh’s treatment during his nomination would have strongly influenced their political turn, according to the newspaper.
A total ban on abortion
Although Vance has toned down his rhetoric recently, he has previously called the exceptions for rape and incest “embarrassing” and has expressed a desire to ban abortion altogether in the past.
Unequal voting rights
Vance proposes that young married couples wishing to start a family should benefit from government loans to encourage the birth rate, and that parents with several children should enjoy greater voting power than childless people.
He appeals to the conservative far right
Vance has made several controversial statements, and his announcement as Trump’s running mate has galvanized many conservative groups promoting ultra-conservative agendas.
The perfect candidate
J.D. Vance appears to be the MAGA movement’s ideal candidate to carry out the 2025 project alongside Donald Trump.
