Will Democrats’ internal battles be the end of Chuck Schumer?

Anger is rising among democrats, as Schumer, the minority leader of the US Senate, is severely criticized for allowing the adoption of Trump’s controversial budget, marked by cuts in essential public services, among others.

Several influential figures of the Democratic Party, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have publicly denounced this decision, leading to a real internal revolt, both among members and supporters.

Ocasio-Cortez qualified Schumer’s gesture as a ‘tremendous mistake’ and warned it was unthinkable that Senate Democrats ‘give away’ the few levers they have.

Bernie Sanders also strongly criticized the leadership of the Democratic Party, stating that “nobody in the Senate should have voted for this dangerous bill” and calling the support of ten Democratic senators, including Chuck Schumer, for this bill “absolute failure of duty by Democratic leaders”.

Former House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, also criticized Schumer, stating during a press conference in San Francisco: ‘I myself don’t give away anything for nothing’, a clear jab at his lack of negotiation with Republicans. According to her, Schumer missed a crucial opportunity to obtain concessions, particularly on the planned cuts to Medicaid.

Schumer tried to justify his decision by stating that it was necessary to avoid the even more serious consequences that a government shutdown would have had, which according to him would have given Trump and Musk a free hand to impose massive budget cuts.

However, his explanations did not convince either the officials or the voters, the latter feeling they had been abandoned by those who are supposed to use their power to defend them.

The democratic base is even preparing petitions, protests and calls for the resignation of Schumer are a lot.

Under pressure, Chuck Schumer has canceled his promotional tour for his new book, scheduled for this month, citing security concerns.

Demonstrations took place in front of his home in Brooklyn, as well as outside his New York office, and others were planned during his promotional tour.
