20 Ancient Messages That Read Like Modern Internet Comments

Some of my internet comments were not things I’m particularly proud of today. But I usually forget them by the next day. The ancients had no such advantage. If they felt like complaining to someone about an innkeeper who’d short-changed them, or wished to publicly brag about a recent seduction, then they picked up a chisel, because their insulting words were likely going to be preserved on a wall for 2,000 years or more. And amazingly enough, plenty of these ancient messages have survived. They’re written on plastered walls, carved on stone tablets, even pressed into wet clay. Below are 20 such examples, each with a joke embedded.
