Indianapolis woman gets in car accident in her Nissan. Then she realizes something: ‘I’ll never have a Nissan again’

Indianapolis first-grade teacher Mrs. Knight (@mrsknightteaches) walked away from a highway rollover with no broken bones—but with a Nissan emblem chemically seared into the back of her hand, courtesy of the airbag that helped save her life.

Knight says she was on her way to the DMV to update her license to her new married name when three cars ahead of her tangled in a highway rear-ending. Traffic in the adjacent lane, per her account, was moving too fast to merge into.

“There was no way that I was gonna be able to brake fast enough to not rear-end [the] Tesla that was in front of me,” she says.

The plan was to swerve into an exit lane. Her Nissan Kicks intervened.

“My car detected that I had hit somebody or was about to, so it automatically took me to zero miles an hour,” Knight says. But she says that she clipped the Tesla's tail, and her Kicks flipped. (Sorry for the skateboarding pun.)

At some point, the airbag deployed, causing the burn.

A man coached her out of the wreck. “If you hear my voice, crawl to me,” Knight remembers him saying. An off-duty EMT sat with her at the guardrail until first responders arrived—roughly twenty minutes later, per her account.

The hospital cleared her: no fractures, no c-spine injuries. Bruised knuckles from bracing against the airbag, head and neck pain, a stiff right leg, a minor cut on the eyebrow, and the outline of Nissan's wordmark—bruised and chemically burned into her hand.

Update

In a follow-up post, she pitched the automaker directly: “Hey @nissan I'm interested in a paid partnership. I have your logo chemically burned into my hand from when I flipped my car and the airbags went off!”

She remains a loyalist. “It's a great car. It obviously protected me very well in an accident.” Also, in another post, the healing from the burn was progressing well.

The comments were mostly people discussing how their cars either saved their lives or harmed them so badly they swore them off.

But one person was pleased with her Nissan. “My Nissan Sentra saved my [expletive] in the T-bone that rolled my car 4 times, snapped my arm in half, broke 2 ribs, cracked my knee, and ruptured my ear in June this year,” the person wrote. “[My] eyes were full of blood for weeks. But we're alive, and I've got my Altima now. In Nissan I trust.”

The Brand That Bites Back?

Knight isn't the first driver marked by her own steering wheel. In 2022, Dallas resident Andrea Juarez (@pielcanela) went viral on Twitter after a side-impact crash in her Nissan left the badge embossed on her forearm as a bruise.

Motor1 explained that the driver's airbag “must also blow out the central steering wheel panel,” typically stamped with a brand logo, at speeds up to 200 miles per hour.

In Dubai, Timsy Wadani told Gulf News she suffered second-degree burns on her hands after her airbags slow-deployed during a minor collision on Jumeirah Beach Road. Her dealer conceded, in a written response, that “deployment of airbags may cause minor burns and abrasions”—a byproduct of nitrogen and steam released in fractions of a second.
