The altercation certainly casts a shadow over what was supposed to be a day dedicated to honoring the Gold Star families of Abbey Gate.
Members of the electoral campaign
Donald Trump’s recent visit to Arlington National Cemetery is at the heart of a controversy as reports emerged of a verbal and physical confrontation that occurred between Arlington National Cemetery staff and members of Trump’s election campaign.
A ceremony
This incident took place during a ceremony marking the third anniversary of the suicide bombing that killed 13 American servicemen at the Kabul airport in Afghanistan.
Breaking the rules
Arlington National Cemetery confirmed a report of altercations after members of Trump’s campaign team, in Section 60 where American veterans are laid to rest, violated cemetery rules despite several warnings from staff.
Cemetery staff
Arlington officials reportedly informed Trump’s team that only the cemetery team was allowed to film or take photos in Section 60 during Trump’s visit.
Verbally and physically
According to sources, when a cemetery official tried to enforce this rule, members of Trump’s team verbally and physically assaulted him.
Section 60
According to NPR, the first media outlet to cover the incident, an anonymous source confirmed that an altercation took place when members of the Trump campaign team attempted to film in Section 60, an area of the cemetery where military personnel who died in Afghanistan or Iraq are buried. This section is subject to a very strict recording policy.
Vigorously denied
Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung vigorously denied any altercation, stating that no physical incident as described took place. He claimed that the Trump campaign’s private photographer had been allowed onto the site.
The real problem
However, despite these explanations, it seems that the real problem lies in the fact that some members of Trump’s team took photos and filmed without authorization, and not the official photographer.
A shadow
This altercation certainly casts a shadow over what was supposed to be a day dedicated to honoring the Gold Star families of Abbey Gate. What’s more, the altercation at Arlington Cemetery hurts Trump politically.
