Trump describes again Canada as a 51st State “serious contender”

Donald Trump continues to claim that Canada is a serious contender to become the 51st State of the United States, even going so far as to once again nickname Justin Trudeau «governor». 

His arrogance and stubbornness seem to blind him to the fact that a unifying wave of patriotism is currently galvanizing Canada.

Trump is provoking a growing sentiment, and he may soon realize that Canadians are not as easy to manipulate as he may think.

According to Trump, Canadians would pay less taxes and benefit from a ‘perfect’ military defense under American control. 

But Canada has evidently no interest in becoming an extension of the United States, a very different country in terms of social and political values.

Canadians cite mass shootings, extreme polarization, lack of social security and corruption, among other things, as Canada offers its citizens a much more peaceful, secure way of life based on values of inclusion and social justice. 

Where Americans struggle with an inaccessible healthcare system, a culture of exacerbated individualism, and a frequently dysfunctional government, Canada promotes solidarity, access to care, and more stable governance. 

In response to Donald Trump’s tariff threats, Canada is therefore intensifying its efforts to diversify its trade partnerships and is undertaking its own protective measures. The country seeks to strengthen its economic ties with the European Union, with which it signed a free trade agreement in 2017, increasing bilateral trade by 65%. Additionally, Canada aims for a 50% increase in its exports outside the United States. At the same time, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau convened an economic summit to reduce trade dependence on the United States and explore new markets.

But also, Canadians are massively boycotting American products and favoring local brands. Many are canceling their trips to the United States in response to these actions. During sporting events, the American anthem is booed, illustrating the growing rejection of Trump’s policies.

The message sent to Donald Trump is clear: Canadians firmly defend their sovereignty, their values… and have a long memory.
